My Books

2nd Edition Coming Summer 2013!

The cookbook will be late due to paper quality. A Taste of Tanzania is not only determined to give you healthy, simple and good recipes from Tanzania, but also a good, clean and attractive book that you will be proud to add in your international cookbook collection. For that, I have requested the publisher to put an hold until I manage to get it printed in a good paper for cookbooks. The book will be out summer 2013.

I am self publishing; little less I knew that print on demand do not use matte or gloss papers for their books. After I received the first copy of the book, I had to stop the book to go on sale, hopefully that issue will be fixed soon so that we can celebrate our cuisine. The book will be out summer 2013 as 2nd Edition.

Mingi(lots of) Love.

I just came across your blog about the recipe book. I am looking forward to getting a copy. I was born and raised in Dar Es Salaam and so is my husband. We now live in Minnesota and have been looking for a recipe for chicken sekela and have yet to get one. Would you kindly be willing to share the recipe if you have it? In the meantime I will continue checking this website on more info about your cookbook release.

    Thanks!!!

    Miriam,

You are doing a very good job with all your cooking media and self promotion activities, youtube, face book, website, and all. I understand you’re wanting to wait for the quality paper for your cookbook, something like that is important to me too, because I keep my good cookbooks for a very, very long time. And I like pictures so I know what things are supposed to look like. However, I really want your cookbook now, so any paper will be okay for your first run and as people read it more will want it and then you can get the very best paper as you earn more money and sell more books. Also, I am hoping that you will consider finding a less expensive way to make your cooking videos other than the obviously high expense you put into your Youtube video’s. I say this because I want to see more video’s and learn more about your cooking. It is fine to have fancy cloths and a fancy kitchen, you look so pretty, your kitchen is immaculate, your cooking utensils are cool and your crew does a good job, but that is not what we are really watching for, we want to see your cooking! American’s notoriously love authentic cooks, even from Africa. Just be yourself and truly, please find a way to cut your costs so you can make more cooking videos.

Last year my Doctor to me that I could not eat any salt or any dairy or anything that comes out of a can or box, so your food is perfect for me and I am certain I am not the only one with these dietary restrictions. I just leave the salt out of all recipes, most of the time;) You have so much to offer and a wonderful unique perspective. So don’t make us wait so long. Your food is perfect. Everything else is secondary. I hope that makes sense.

    • Miriam Rose Kinunda on December 31, 2012 at 8:23 am

      Angela,
Wooooo! Many thanks dear for your good advise. It is not easy for me, I am a perfectionist, I think sometimes it become my failure instead of helping. I will put every your advise in mind for sure and I am working towards it; it is not easy to be me, and sometimes I do not like me because I want things to be perfect. I even arrange things in a line in my fridge, now my daughter is following my character which hurts me because I know it is not good.
About the book. everything is taken care of and I will soon announce the date/month. To tell you the truth, the first book was very very bad. It is hard to say. And they were charging $71.95 dollars which does’nt make sense even Oprah who is very known won’t sell a cook book at that price. The price is what shocked me and i had no say at all.

Thanks very much for your concern and stay blessed. You will see the book soon within two month.

I was fortunate to try Tanzanian influenced food recently at a restaurant in Windsor,Vermont…the restaurant’s name by the way is “Miriam’s”..

Can you send me an email when the cookbook is ready to buy? I thought the melding of spices and food was incredible and would love to give it a try at home…

The social ministry committee of our congregation (Messiah Lutheran in Bethlehem PA) is hosting a potluck with an African theme to raise money and awareness for the need to support the ELCA Malaria Initiative and we are looking for authentic recipes to use. Our potluck is Nov. 3.

      Thank you for your help.

      • Miriam Rose Kinunda on October 8, 2012 at 12:14 pm

        Hi Linda,

I have a list of simple recipes from my website. It does not take much time and full of flavor. But my rule is, if you want your food to taste better, use organic meat and vegetables.

        1. Coconut rice with peas and carrots Your guest will love this. If you do not like turmeric please use saffron or save money by using yellow food coloring
        2. Simple beef stew Very simple yet taste great.
        3. Kachumbari Any Tanzanian rice will not be rice if served in a function without Kachumbari.

If you have to pick only one dish, make the rice and tell your other two friends to make Kachumbari and beef stew. Please if you use these recipes post the photos of the food to Taste of Tanzania facebook page.

Will this be available in PDF format? I would like to purchase the electronic file please.

    • Miriam Rose Kinunda on October 4, 2012 at 9:36 am

I am working on this: I am yet to see how many people would buy ebook. Many people do prefer printed cookbooks. If I will feel I will sale then I will because it does cost money to higher someone to create an ebook. I am trying to learn to do it by myself.

    • Miriam Rose Kinunda on August 21, 2012 at 9:02 am

There will be a little delay. I am self publishing, there are some issues that I was not aware off, I have put the printing and sale of the book on hold. Hope to get a traditional publisher for my other books so that this will not happen again.

      Sorry Diana.

  • Is there any difference between mahamri and mandazi? May 10, 2013
As I am reading my old notes here, I came across something that I wrote a few years ago but I forgot to post it here. Before I post this topic, I would like to hear what my readers have to say. When I used to live in Nairobi Kenya in my teenage years, I noticed that almost every Kenyan I knew did not know what mandazi were, but they did know mahamri. I used […]
