Vipoopoo Dessert From TanzaniaVipoopoo is a side dish mostly prepared during Ramadhan. I always feel like this would make a good desert; so I decided to modify this recipe to be just perfect for a dessert. I do believe we do need to modify our recipes. We do have nice recipes that can be used in different ways.  Enjoy.

 Ingredients

  • 1 cup  rice flour
  • ¼ tsp  Cardamon ground
  • 1 cup  Coconut milk
  • ½ cup  Sugar
  • 1 cup  Water
  • Food color Optional

Preparations

  1. Boil water.
  2. Add rice flour; mix well with a wooden spoon until the mixture is hard.
  3. Divide into different parts depending on how many colors you are using.
  4. Add color in each and continue to mix until the color blend well.
  5. Make small balls of about ½ tea spoon full. set aside

Coconut syrup

  1. Mix sugar and coconut milk. Make sure the sugar is dissolved completely. Then boil the mixture.
  2.  Put a few rice balls in the boiling coconut milk for about 5 minutes or until soft. Remove from the pot and place into dessert bowl. Repeat until all rice balls are cooked.
  3.  When all balls are done. Increase the heat a little bit and let the coconut boil until it turns to heavy syrup. Remove from stove and let it cool.
  4.  Pour the syrup to each bowl of rice balls. You can cover the balls with syrup or just put half. This will be your choice.
  5.  Serve at room temperature.

Hi! I am really excited to make this recipe for a school project!! I don’t know how many servings this recipe makes, though. Could you tell me?? Thanks!!

enough for 4 to six people. it depends how much you want each person to eat. I won’t recommend to serve too much because it is very sweet.

When do you put the cardomon, Rose?

    • Miriam Rose on November 13, 2011 at 3:52 pm

Woooo! I should check in my book too. THanks for that.

My mom showed me to use the cardamom in the syrup. But I mix with the rice floor, it gives a better taste and it does not make the syrup dark. This is different from making “vipoopoo as a side dish”

      I will update the recipe.

As I am reading my old notes here, I came across something that I wrote a few years ago but I forgot to post it here. Before I post this topic, I would like to hear what my readers have to say. When I used to live in Nairobi Kenya in my teenage years, I noticed that almost every Kenyan I knew did not know what mandazi were, but they did know mahamri. I used […]
