I am sure you are wondering why I am talking about “nazi” in this website. Apparently nazi is a Swahili word for coconut. Mbuzi ya nazi is a Swahili word for coconut grater. The above photo is a coconut grater that I use in my house, I came with from Tanzania.
In Tanzania grating coconut is not only the preparation of an ingredient for our recipes, but it is also an art. For example; some towns have competitions to find the best and fastest women to grate coconut. Mind you, one must grate only the white part of the coconut, which is not easy if you do not know how to grate using mbuzi ya nazi. Visit http://www.youtube.com/user/TasteofTanzania?blend=13&ob=5#p/u/4/M0XmM05_MRU to see how it is used.
Nowadays you can find electric coconut graters. As modern as I would like to be, I still prefer to use my mbuzi ya nazi, or unless I get industrial electric coconut grater. Visit here on youtube to see a coconut greater that can be used on the table/counter.
